Safe Travels

The Psalms are the prayer/song book of the bible. There are 150 Psalms in the bible. They can be uplifting and inspiring; they can be filled with despair and anger. Some are short, some are very, very long. Some are more popular then others, and many sound the same. Here is Psalm 121:

1I lift up my eyes to the hills— from where will my help come?

2My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

3He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber.

4He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

5The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade at your right hand.

6The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.

7The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life.

8The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and forevermore.

Psalm 23 would have to be the most popular Psalm. Psalm 121 is a popular one too. It’s image of lifting our eyes to the hills speaks to those of use who live in hilly country. Our horizons are filled with hilltops, what lies beyond? That is a mystery.

Psalm 121 is a Psalm of ascents, as in ascending a hill. This Psalm was used for travelers on pilgrimage to Jerusalem. It was sung before departure; during the trip; and on arrival as a celebration that the Lord brought them safely through.

The Psalm speaks of God not letting the travelers foot be moved, as in turning an ankle. The Psalm proclaims that God will watch over the travelers and not fall asleep. God will give shade to the traveler so that the sun doesn’t overwhelm them. God will keep them from evil, God will keep their life.

We may not be on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem but we are on a pilgrimage in life. We are daily travelers with a sacred destination. We depend daily on God’s grace and care to see us through. One day we will arrive at our final destination, but until then we have today to get through.

So keep this scripture close for your travels this summer! Keep it close for you daily journey wherever you find yourself! Our help comes from the Lord, rejoice.

Lord, we look to you for help, keep us safe on this journey of life. Keep all of us safe and we thank you for the daily blessings you send our way. Amen.

Peace, Pastor Dave
